The sun is out and the country fairs are in full swing! The Jemsox team have been at the renowned Great Yorkshire Show 2026. We’re thrilled to be there, proudly showcasing our much-loved collection from The British Boot Sock Company.
There is something truly special about meeting our customers face-to-face (getting instant feedback) and sharing the passion that goes into every single pair of our 100% British wool boot socks. What made this year’s show even more remarkable was our location: our stand was featured right in the heart of the British Wool marquee.
Being surrounded by fellow champions of British farming and textiles gave us the perfect opportunity to talk about what actually goes into making the perfect boot sock. It’s not just about knitting; it’s about the science and heritage of the fleece itself.
The Science of Sheep: The Periodic Table of Wool
If you visited our stand or the British Wool marquee, you might have spotted something that looks like it belongs in a chemistry lab rather than a farm! British Wool has developed a Periodic Table of British Sheep Breeds to meticulously categorise the different types of wool produced across the UK.
Check out the fascinating chart from the show here:
Just like elements in chemistry, every breed of sheep produces a fleece with its own unique characteristics, micron range and texture. This grading system ensures that the right wool is used for the right product, whether that's fine apparel, durable carpets, or in our case, the ultimate pair of rugged, cosy boot socks.
The Secret to Our Boot Socks: The "Medium" Grade
We often get asked which type of sheep’s wool we use…so, where do our socks sit on this periodic table?
To craft our 100% British Wool boot socks, we specifically use British Wool’s Medium grade.
For us, this grade is the "Goldilocks" of wool for footwear - it perfectly balances the softness needed for all-day comfort with the durability required to withstand long country walks, rigorous workdays, and everything in between.
This Medium grade isn't just from one type of sheep. It is a carefully curated blend that combines wool with similar, complementary fibres from a wonderful variety of traditional breeds, including:
-
Texel
-
Llanwenog
-
Romney
-
Halfbred-Scotch
-
Beltex
-
Cambridge
-
Devon Closewool
-
Border Leicester
-
Halfbred Welsh
-
Lleyn
-
Bleu Du Maine
-
Friesland
-
British Milksheep
By blending these specific fleeces, we achieve a yarn that is insulating, breathable, and incredibly resilient. Every time you pull on a pair of socks from The British Boot Sock Company, you are quite literally wearing a piece of the British countryside, supported by generations of farming heritage.
A massive thank you to everyone who came to see us at The Great Yorkshire Show. If you missed us there, don't worry - you can explore our full 100% British wool collection right here on our website.
