Understanding medium grade wool
The word “medium” can be misleading. It isn't a measure of quality, nor does it mean average.
British Wool grades wool according to its natural characteristics, including fibre fineness, staple length, crimp, handle and lustre. Medium wool generally measures between 31 and 35 microns in diameter and is recognised as one of the most versatile types of wool in the British clip.
For socks, that versatility is important.
A good boot sock needs to feel comfortable while having the substance to withstand regular wear. Medium wool offers a considered balance of softness, resilience and durability, making it particularly well suited to a sock that is expected to earn its place in your wardrobe.
What does micron mean?
Micron is simply a measurement of fibre diameter. The finer the fibre, the lower the micron count.
Medium British Wool typically falls between 31 and 35 microns. But micron is only part of the story. The length and strength of the fibre, along with its crimp and other natural characteristics, all contribute to the finished yarn.
This is why British Wool grades individual fleeces according to their qualities and suitability, rather than treating every fleece from a particular breed as identical.

Medium wool comes from a diverse range of British sheep, including Romney, Texel, Border Leicester, Beltex, Lleyn, Cambridge and British Milksheep.
